Wedding Wear

I love going to weddings! I love going alone with Shane and enjoying a night full of love and happiness. With my littlest sis getting married in September, wedding attire has been fresh on my mind.

I have two rules for weddings: no white and no risqué. White is an obvious one. The risqué is because good or bad attention, no attention should be taken away from the beauty in white. Y'all would be shocked at how many times women show up in the WRONG dress! Pretty simple, right?

Unless you are told straight up, it is usually hard to know how dressy a wedding is going to be. I have always felt it is better to be over dressed than under so I always keep things simple, but chic for weddings.

The best way to look simple and chic I believe is a fabulous maxi. I know y'all know I love maxis, but they really are perfect for this occasion. With the right accessories, maxis can rock a summer casual look or a semi formal look. Also this is the perfect time to try out a colored maxi and not just your black :).  Let me show you:

These are all from F21!

Now if the wedding is a common wedding or outdoor wedding, I would pair any of these with one of the following necklaces (all found on Bridier Baubles)...it will look very romantic and chic, while not being too over dressed. Add some flat metallic sandals or fab wedges and viola!
If the wedding is more formal or you are just not sure...I would wear any of these...

Yes they are all the same style (all from Riffraff), but I think this layered style is so chic and classy on!  Put on some heels and grab a clutch and you will look like a million bucks!  Here I did it for a semi-formal charity event and got many compliments and I felt dressed for the occasion...
I wore a long red maxi and heels.

So that is my take on wedding attire.  A shorter dress would look fabulous too, but there is something about a maxi that is ethereal and romantic.  What do y'all think? Let me know if you try this outfit soon!

Dress???

FIRST - Suburban Strut now has a Facebook page here!! I will link my posts, post shopping deals I find, and outfits!! Go like if you wanna!!!

So how many times have you been shopping and you see a "dress", you try it on and it barely covers your booty? Or you order a dress online, you get it home, try it on and realize you could not bend over if you had to!!    Oh Lord y'all - it happens to all of us.  The problem is that so many of the cute "dresses" now at all the boutiques are this short and it just pisses us off.   I have a solution!

If you find a dress you love, but feel it's too short, wear it as a tunic!!  There is no reason why you cannot wear it with a pair of skinnies or even your favorite jeans, as a top, and it look just as cute.  So many of my tops, are truly dresses that I wear with pants.  Here are just a few examples:

Navy top - Altered State, Yellow - Riffraff, Chevron - F21, and Cream - H&M

Most of the time I wear skinnies with them, but the top left with the navy, I had flares on and I thought it looked great.

I wore this black dress Tuesday as a top with my white skinnies for meetings all day...
I like to do this for work because I can still wear the super cute, dressy dresses, and it still be office acceptable.  It can open up your wardrobe tremendously!!

What do y'all think?
Do you currently have too short dresses hanging in your closet that you are not wearing because they are too short?  Try this! Let me know if it worked for you!!

Happy "short dress wearing" strutters! :)

Denim Shirt AHA!

I have been really digging the denim shirt trend.  I have seen it on so many blogs and in stores, styled so well. I love them tied up with skirts and colored pants.  I have never been a huge fan of button downs on me as my larger chest does not do well with them :).  I really wanted to hop on this trend, but I did not want to just do it to do it, and find a way customize it to me and what works in my lifestyle.

So I bought one last week at where else? Old Navy :).  I got a larger size so I could keep it buttoned, got it home, and being the "long shirt lover" I am, I was not loving the fact that it barely covered my waist and was boxy.  So, now I had a project - how could I wear this???

Well this morning, I was running late and fell back on my black maxi to wear and saw my new denim shirt hanging in my closet.  I had a fashion AHA! moment!  I added the shirt, tied up over my maxi with a big necklace - and I LOVE how it looked!!

This is why this works for us:  It can be short when you wear a maxi that covers everything!  I was not worried about my stomach or hips because my maxi covered it all.  I haven't been pulling on it and worrying about it all as I know I would had I worn pants or a skirt. Since I did not have to button it, no worries about a button popping open either :). You could do this with any color maxi and it would look great.

So what do y'all think? Will you try it?  Here is the best part about these shirts - they are going to be a perfect transition piece for the Fall!! SCORE!!

Happy day strutters!

Colored Skinnies Secrets

Hope y'all had a fantastic weekend! I had a great weekend and I even got to shop ALONE today! While shopping, I noticed that my FAVORITE skinnies were stocked, and y'all would be so happy to know that the first that came to mind when I saw them was "I have to tell my Suburban Strutters about these!" :).

This Spring, after I had shed some l-bs, I decided to venture out into the world of skinny jeans. After countless pairs barely fitting over my hips or barely covering my lady parts, I found a gem. Oh friends - I found the best colored skinnies and y'all have to try them! I know how intimidating colored pants can be and so many of y'all won't do it - but these are fabulous! Now bare with me, y'all are going to have to trust me....

These sweet pants are from Forever 21 here!

Note: I do not encourage wearing the short tied up shirt :).

Here I am wearing the many different colors I own of these (y'all have seen these pics, but I have gotten so many questions about them)...

Now here is why they work. I have never had any luck in pants at F21 and when my mom told me to try them, I had low expectations. But these, run BIG! Like you need to get at LEAST one size smaller (most people go 2). They run big and they stretch - I mean that is like holy grail of skinny pants, right??? I am not exaggerating, I only got one size smaller and mine are falling off by the end of the day (I actually dry them!). They are twill rather than denim so they are super comfortable. They icing on top - they are only $15.80!! They are worth ordering and trying at that price :)! Go online and they have many colors - I found a bunch of new colors (I got turquoise!) at our store today. No worries, these can be transitioned into Fall as well!

So there you have another one of my secrets :)...now get to shopping :)!!

Maxi that Skirt!

Probably the most common question my IRL friends text and ask lately is "What top do I wear with this maxi skirt? (insert said maxi skirt pic)".  A couple of y'all even asked in my comments on the give away, so let's discuss it ladies...

When you are looking for a top to wear a maxi skirt, think about your favorite maxi DRESS.  More than likely, it is fitted on top and then flows out just under the chest.  Use the same idea with your top.

What has worked for me (and all my buddies ) is a fitted top with the flowy skirt.  Most maxi skirts hit you at a funny place on the hips, right at the spot on your tummy that you are not quite fond of, am I right? Therefore, it flows out from your tummy and you lose your waist line.  You need to wear a fitted top so that you can keep your waist in tact and add some curve to your hips.  No matter what size you are, you will look and feel like you are wearing a tent if you do not accentuate your waist in these skirts.

Now, I know, wearing anything tight across your stomach makes you want to take the skirt back, but you CAN look good in it.  Just because I said fitted, I DID NOT SAY TIGHT!! For the love of target ladies, remember to not buy too tight shirts :). If your shirt fits correctly, you should be able to "bunch" it a bit at your tummy to camouflage said belly.  Trust me, I am the mother of three and I am not comfortable in fitted tops across my belly - and I wear this look.

With it being so hot outside, right now, I wear long tank tops with my black maxi.  I will also add a sleeveless (not too loose cardi) over it if I am still feel self conscious.  It still needs to show the waist.  I am wearing this look today...what a coincidence :)....see...

Another great thing to add would be a fitted denim jacket - that would look fabulous!! I will definitely be sporting it this Fall!  A maxi skirt will DEFINITELY transition into Fall.  Remember my fave tees (two posts back)? They look great with maxi skirts too!!  Layer on the accessories as well - scarves, necklaces, etc.  This is a great time to add a bright color or neon on top  - the possibilities are endless!  Unless the skirt is REALLY long, I usually wear flat sandals, but wedges look darling too.

Here is a cute skirt from Target

Here is a pretty one from F21

So what do y'all think? Agree? Disagree? Will you try it out? Send me a pic or tag me if you try it out!!!

Happy struttin!

My Fave Tees

So yall have asked "What piece of clothing can you not live without?"  Well that would be my vintage v-neck tees!  Let me tell you why...

Everyone should find, well fitted, solid, soft tees of some kind that they love.  They truly are a staple that is needed year round. There are v-necks, crew necks, scoop necks, etc.  Get the one that suits you best.  What else do you need to look for? Glad you asked :)....

Here is what to look for when shopping:

1. LONG- I like all my shirts to hit me mid hip at the very least - in other words: cover the belly and hips.  I like it cover the zipper of my pants.
2.  NOT TOO TIGHT!  You will not wear it if it is tight. Trust me.  Feeling good in your outfit is not what size it is, it is about how you look and FEEL in it.  Don't be afraid to go up a size, trust me!
3. COLORS AND NEUTRALS - once you find the one you like - buy colors and neutrals.  Seriously, buy as many as you can.  The opportunities to wear a good tee is endless.

With all the bright fashion necklaces and jewelry now, a plain tee can go from boring to fashionable.  Take a solid tee, add a necklace or two and a pair or shorts (any bottom really), your metallic sandals, and you will have an instant outfit.  This is the ultimate "oh I just threw this on"  when you were really running around like crazy that morning cleaning kids' faces, gathering diapers, and trying to get out the door on time.  You will look chic and put together, even if you feel like a hot mess.  The key is that it truly needs to be effortless and comfy (get the right size!)!

The best part - a good tee can be worn year round! In the fall, pair with jeans and chucks or boots with a scarf.  In the winter with a long cardi, boots, and jeans.  These are the beginning to your layering!  I wear mine even with skirts to work and under maxi dresses.  Here are some examples of my latest tee looks - sorry if you can't see the whole outfit - I have to get better about that :)...

Dressed up for work - later that night, I changed into black shorts and added a leopard sheer cardi...two totally different ways!
With turban, couple necklaces and shorts...
With hat, one necklace and shorts...
With yellow jeans and neon jewelry...

There are so many ways to wear these and you will be thankful to have these staple shirts!  So where do I get mine - I bet you could guess....Old Navy ($8.50 right now!)! My favorite is the vintage v-neck tees there.  They also have crew necks.  Gap has some great ones and so does Target - here is a link to my favorite HERE!

I am not a fan of spending a ton on things like this that I don't mind replacing every once in awhile, so these are perfect.  If you have a favorite - share the shopping wealth and let us know!

Happy shopping strutters!

Over 100 Followers - HOLLA!

Hey y'all! We are homeward bound from a fab vacation at the beach and I just saw that I broke 100 followers here!!! Y'all. I cannot tell you how humbled I am and thankful for all the feedback emails I received via the giveaway!!! I didn't know if anyone would care to read or even agree with my thoughts, but knowing y'all are enjoying it and getting something out of it-thrills me to death!! So - I have added AN ADDITIONAL NECKLACE to the giveaway!! That's right - I am giving away the yellow bubble necklace AND a turquoise one!!!

So if you haven't entered go to the post below! I will be drawing TWO WINNERS tomorrow!!

Until then - I have to tell y'all about this fabulous find I wore this weekend...

I got this long, red, strapless jumper at Walmart!!!! Yes, you read that - Walmart! I think it was $30 and fit great. It is long, so all you taller ladies will love it. They had it in leopard too...My only concern was Bree pulling on it and exposing "the twins" :)! This was the perfect outfit to layer necklaces or a scarf would look great. If you aren't a fan of wearing strapless (I am usually not, but when in Florida on vacation...) add a sleeveless black cardi and you will feel much more comfortable!

I will be back tomorrow with winner winner :)!
